Why Should you Assess People?
In the hiring process, many factors contribute to someone getting a job...or not. What exactly are some of those items?
A resume? Sure. It's essential. An interview? Of course, in fact, many companies interview candidates multiple times with multiple people. Reference checks? By all means, yes!
Are these are great ways to gain insight into your candidates? Certainly...to an extent. Here's the problem. About 70% of all resume's contain false information. Interviews can be deceiving. Here's a quote from the book Testing People At Work: "Unfortunately Hollingsworth's results showed that one candidate was ranked 6th by one interviewer and 56th by another. Subsequent analyses have suggested that the traditional interview is less than 3% better than chance alone." Sadly references too may offer limited insight as many companies today fear litigation if a bad reference is provided. Hence the fact that so many companies today, when called for reference checks, simply say "They are (or are not) eligible for re-hire".
